Hospitalist

Now a days lots of physician decide to pursue fellowship, but fellowship is a commitment for atleast 2 to 3 years. After spending 3 to 4 years in exhaustive residency it is really taxing to jump into fellowship immediately.

Lots of residents decide to take a break inbetween and try to rejuvenate, make some money in jobs and do something in the spare time which they always wanted to do but could not find time during busy residency.

For me, I have lots of goals for this one year.

1. Traveling
2. I love programming so I am planning to spend some time
3. Research about best softwares for my pocket pc
4. Spending quality time with family
5. Real life independent experience of patient care and treatment
whew.............................too many goals

How to achieve that.

I researched options and I think to work as a Hospitalist is the best case scenario, I would not loose my edge, will not be lazy and still making some decent money as Hospitalist.

I know it will be hectic when I am on duty but then once I am done I am free to pursue what I like most.

What am I doing?

For the curious out there, I am in my final year of Internal Medicine residency program. I am IMG/FMG whatever you call it. Basically, I love Medicine, Computer and lots of other things.

Currently I am preparing for my board exams and before that I have to pass step 3 and I found out that I have to appear for step 2 CS previously known as CSA, so now in this limited amount of time I am reading like never before and I think I am doing pretty ok.

What am I reading.

USMLE world for CSA (step 2 CS)
MKSAP - for board review
registered for Satis Dalla's unique review course
I also review MEDSTUDY DVDs along with companion books

I guess that is enough for today. Btw, I am in wonderful rotation now so I get lots of time not only to read but also for blogging.

I happened to find some good sites which discuss physician salary. I think it is a good idea to see what is the current trend as far as compensation package in different field. After looking at it carefully it seems that for doctors it is easier to settle down anywhere in USA and have a decent lifestyle.

You can visit following sites for information on physician salary

Almost all physician who graduate from Internal Medicine program know that fellowship is very essential not only for intellectual satisfaction but also for long term solid growth. As a primare care provider the role is limited to preventive medicine and sometimes that work sort of becomes routine. On the contrary practice after fellowship provides you an opportunity to handle challenging cases, intellectual satisfaction and pretty good reward. But to pursue the fellowship after 3 years of Internal Medicine residency for another 2 or 3 years is really a daunting task. Now a days lots of physicians take 1 year or 2 years off before they pursue fellowship. What would be the best career option to do during those years. There are different options and each one has its own merrits and negatives.

Some people choose to do chief residency but it is not available to everyone and pay is less. Some people pursue research but it is again by choice. Some people pursue job in office practice or as a Hospitalist or locum tenents.

I think if you really want to take it easy for one year than job as a Hospitalist or Locum tenent is much better because not only it provides flexible schedules but also a good source of income.

I read this wonderful article on website of New England Journal of Medicine which every physician must read if he/she is entering as a new physician in job market. After spending three or more years in residency we pretty much are not aware of lots of other things which are important to be successful as physician. This article throws a great insight on what to look for when you select a new job.

Here is the begining of article

Physician Compensation Models: The Basics, the Pros, and the Cons

Compensation models have become less complex than they were in the 1990s, but it’s important to know the basics when evaluating practice opportunities.
For most young physicians who are choosing their first practice opportunity, selecting among compensation plans isn’t likely an option. Contract terms may entail some room for negotiation, but compensation models are well established for most medical groups, hospitals, and large managed care organizations.
